Spilling the Tea on Proper Communication

One of the key aspects of developing and presenting professionalism comes in the form of proper communication. Communication is defined as an exchange or a connection between persons. Being able to communicate isn't just being able to do it verbally, but also in the body language that we display.

"Yo", "Bruh", and "Girrrrrl" *includes hair flip*, are things that I once incorporated into my everyday daily conversation, whether professional or unprofessional. I QUICKLY have realized over the last year that talking to everyone in that manner may have been one of the reasons I haven't progressed as much as I could have. Your first impression is everything and it starts with the way you speak and the way you present yourself.

To begin with proper body language starts with maintaining and holding good eye contact. For many, sometimes it is hard doing such because people are shy, cultural differences, or because of other personal reasons. One of the best methods I've learned in developing good eye contact is when greeting a professional or possible employer attempt to make eye contact long enough to know what the other person's eye color is. Another way to improve on body language is to maintain an "open" appearance. An open appearance includes facing the person directly and sitting upright with palms facing up; avoid crossing your arms or hiding hands.
